Can I Install CGI Scripts On Any Server?
If you have been to a Web site and seen "cgi-bin" in the address, you've probably just executed a CGI script on that server. In order to execute CGI scripts, you need a Web site hosting provider that supports CGI scripts. Most hosting providers support the use of CGI scripts. Below is an example of an address containing CGI:
http://www.myserver.com/cgi-bin/cgiscript.pl
The ".pl" in the address above, is a referrence to Practical Extraction and Reporting Language (PERL). Perl is the most common language used for writing CGI scripts. You may also notice that some CGI scripts end with ".cgi", this is due to different operating systems (OS). Depending on your server's OS, this file type may vary.
You may also want to look for a hosting provider that supports Server Side Includes (SSI). SSI is not required to execute or run all CGI scripts, but some scripts require it. With SSI, a CGI script can include information from the server or a file and display it on a Web page. Below is an example of an SSI call tag:
<!--#exec cgi="/cgi-bin/cgiscript.pl" -->
If your server or hosting provider supports CGI and/or SSI, you are most likely able to install the majority of CGI scripts available on the Web on your server.
